Long, healthy and lustrous hair is a cherished desire of many, men and women alike, this makes loads of people concerned with the problem of hair breakage and thinning hair.
So many people have suffered hair loss as a result of varying factors. In this part of the world braids and the very popular "Ghana weaving' are top on the list of hairstyles to blame. When I noticed my hair growth was stagnant I had to evaluate the attention I had always given it and also considered some factors that caused my hair problem. Back then it was a result of excess use of flat irons and hair dryers.
Some other causes of hair loss include, genetics, nutritional deficiencies, certain intense hairstyles and hormonal imbalance.
However there are some home remedies that can help promote your hair growth and make it healthy always. One of my favourite amongst these remedies is shea butter. Shea butter deeply moisturises hair and protects against hair loss. Here are some other home remedies that work!
1. Scalp Massage and Hot Oil Treatment:
Massaging your scalp helps improves the circulation of blood and this stimulates hair growth. It's advisable to do this for 5-10 minutes daily and you can be sure of results after a while. To massage your scalp, simply rub your fingers on it in a circular motion. Knead your scalp and apply gentle pressure to open up blood vessels in order to increase blood flow. Remember proper circulation of blood stimulates hair growth.
You can combine massaging with hot oil treatment once or twice a week. For this I like to use a bit of shea butter, coconut oil and olive oil. Heat any of these oil in a microwave (heating it will help it penetrate the hair shaft easily and also reduce dandruff) . Put the hot oil on your hair and comb it through to ensure even distribution and reduced breakage during shampooing. Wear a plastic cap or wrap a warm towel around your head (use a hair dryer to heat the towel) and leave it on for at least half an hour before shampooing.
2. Aloe vera:
Aloe vera is one of my favourite plants thanks to its numerous general health benefits. This is also one of my favourite remedies for hair growth because it's rich in antioxidants and several nutrients that promote the quality of hair.
Simply apply the gel to your hair and massage from scalp to tip. I usually leave it on to enjoy the deep conditioning benefits, but you can rinse it off after 20-30 minutes of applying it. It's advisable to do this 2-3 times a week.
3. Lemon juice:
It's not news that lemons are rich in vitamin C and vitamins B1,
B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, folic acid, and other
nutrients, plus, they are loaded with antioxidants, but did you know they encourage hair growth? Yes they do! And you can thank the antioxidants in them for that. Lemon juice protects against dandruff and promotes smooth shiny hair while it helps your hair grow. When applied on the scalp, it stimulates circulation and hence prevents hair loss. The recommended usage of lemon juice for hair treatment is bi-weekly, because it could lighten your hair over time due to its richness in Vitamin C.
To use lemon juice mix one part and two parts of olive or coconut oil. Apply it on your scalp and hair and leave it for at least 20minutes, then wash it out with shampoo.
4 . Eggs:
The use of eggs for hair treatment and growth is popular amongst hairstylists because of its effectiveness. Eggs are a great source of protein, thus, they are highly beneficial in helping your hair grow.
Whisk two egg yolks and mix in two tablespoons of olive oil. Apply the mixture on your scalp and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse it out with cold water and then shampoo your hair as usual.
Alternatively, mix one egg and one- quarter cup each of plain yogurt and mayonnaise in a blender. Apply this hair mask and cover your hair with a shower cap, heat it up with a hair dryer and leave it on for about one hour before rinsing it out.
5. Castor Oil:
Castor oil facilitates hair growth because it is rich in omega-9 fatty acids and vitamin E. The thick oil moisturizes your hair, adds volume,
prevents frizzing. It also combats scalp infections.
For enhanced benefits, it is best to mix castor oil with an equal amount of a base oil such as olive oil. Rub it on your scalp and
massage. Leave it on for 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, rinse it out and
shampoo your hair. If it is difficult to remove, use a clarifying shampoo.
These are five natural home remedies that promote hair growth and protect against hair loss. However, your efforts to boost hair growth will not reap good results if you have underlying problems like hormonal imbalance, chronic illness, or a severe infection.
Certain factors like pregnancy and birth control pills can frustrate your hair growth efforts, so try to identify any underlying issues
contributing to hair problems and address them as soon as possible.
If you're trying to grow your hair back consider investing in good wigs. Wigs will permit you treat your hair as often as you want without having to change hairstyles each time. Also avoid heating tools completely. I applied these tips and my hair is reaping the benefits.
